our mission The mission of the Adult Literacy Programs is to assist adults in reaching their literacy goals – some learners want to learn the English language, write a resume, to get or keep a job, to learn math or improve their writing skills, to earn a high school diploma, or transition to post-secondary or training. Whatever the learner’s goal is becomes our goal. About 300 people are involved in the classes, tutoring, and small groups each year. The Adult Literacy Programs are governed and funded by the Bureau of Adult Basic Literacy Education. The YWCA Adult Literacy Programs currently rank 15 out of 128 adult literacy programs across the state of Pennsylvania. Literacy is a vital part of our lives – in the workplace, our families, and in our community. The YWCA has been providing literacy tutoring for more than 20 years. Now, we provide 8 literacy programs to meet the needs of adults throughout the tri-county area. In May 2007 the Adult Literacy Center moved to space provided by National Penn Bank at Sunnybrook and High Streets. but have a computer with Internet access, you can learn at a distance—and even
prepare to take the GED test. GED Connection videos and workbooks help you
prepare for the GED exam. Workplace Essential Skills are also available through
Distance Learning and will help you get and succeed at the job you want. For
more information about Distance Learning, please call 610-326-READ. english as a second language classes Coming to America means a lot more than just learning English. It’s a whole new way of life! This year English as a Second Language classes have been offered morning, afternoon, and evening at the Adult Literacy Center. Thirty-seven beginner or intermediate learners are in the classes from countries including Puerto Rico, Afghanistan, Poland, Mexico, and Russia. ESL is a class for adults using a life skills
approach to learning English. Adults learn to read and write English, learn
about American culture and holidays, enjoy conversational English and learn the
everyday skills needed to function successfully in the U.S. The structure of the
class is a small group with discussions, speakers, and some computer learning.
ESL class and small groups meet weekly year around. Contact the ESL Instructor to register. english language, and civics and u.s. citizenship English Language Civics is a new program assisting adults with the English language, increasing community involvement, and working towards U.S. citizenship. family literacy with early childhood education The Family Literacy program is offered to parents receiving adult education services at the YWCA Literacy Center and have children infant through 3rd grade. The program offers family field trips, activities for parents and children to do together, special events and more. There are also opportunities for parents to hear information on topics such as health, personal finance and discipline. Contact the Family Literacy Coordinator at 610-326-7323 for more information. Prepare to take the GED test with an
individual tutor or in a small group. Personal assistance twice weekly,
homework, and GED practice tests will help you prepare to earn your GED. For
more information contact the Student/Tutor Coordinator. A program preparing and bridging adults to community college courses. Available at both Montgomery County Community College campuses. This vocational education and GED preparation program is available at the Human Services Center in Norristown. Classes are Monday – Friday 8:30am-12:30pm. Approximately 65 pairs of adult learners and volunteer tutors are working together each year in reading, writing, and math. |
